YAG, short for yttrium aluminum garnet, is a compound oxide produced by the reaction of Y2O3 and Al2O3, which belongs to cubic system and has garnet structure. The unit cell of garnet can be regarded as a network of dodecahedron, octahedron and tetrahedron.

Garnet-type rare earth aluminate compound (RE3Al5O12) is one of the candidate materials for high temperature thermal barrier coating ceramics. In particular, Y3Al5O12 has high-temperature structural stability, does not undergo phase transition until the melting point, and has extremely low oxygen permeability (about 10 orders of magnitude lower than that in zirconia), which can effectively protect the adhesive layer from oxidation.
