Physical properties: The appearance of MoCl₅ varies with the physical state in which it is located, and the solid, liquid and gas phases are black crystals, black amber liquid and black amber vapor, respectively. The molecular weight is 273.2, the melting point is 194℃, the boiling point is 268℃, and the density is 2.928g/cm3 at 25℃. Electrical performance: 25℃ is an insulator, 216℃ is 1.9×10-6Ω, 258℃ is 7.5×10-6Ω.
MoCl₅ is a lively more volatile crystal, is a high purity refractory metal halide. It chemically reacts in gaseous and liquid state, volatilizes at medium temperature, is easily decomposed into metal molybdenum deposits in gaseous state, and is easily soluble in organic solvents, which are conducive to its practical application.
Uses: Used as a chlorination catalyst, a component of refractory resin, for the preparation of molybdenum hacarbonyl, metal-organic compounds
